Mix the marinade
Chop the onion and mince the garlic. In a bowl, stir together the chopped onion, melted butter, cider vinegar, sugar, chili powder, salt, Worcestershire, pepper, ground mustard, hot pepper sauce, and garlic. Scoop out 1/3 cup and stash it in the fridge separately — that's your basting sauce for later.

Marinate the chicken
Pull the skin off the chicken breast halves, then toss them in the rest of the marinade until coated. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour, turning now and then. Longer is better if you've got the time.

Fire up the grill
Get the grill going for indirect medium heat — set your gas burners so the chicken won't sit right over the flame, or bank your coals to one side. Drain the chicken and toss the used marinade.

Grill it
Grill covered over indirect medium heat for 20 minutes. Flip and keep grilling another 15–25 minutes, basting with that reserved sauce near the end, until the juices run clear. Crack a cold one while you wait.
