Make the simple syrup
In a small saucepan, combine the sugar with 2 cups water and bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Turn off the heat and let it cool to room temperature. This is what gives the limeade its body without tasting like straight sugar.

Puree the cherries
Pit the cherries and blend them until completely smooth. If you want a clear, no-pulp drink, pour the puree through a fine sieve. Fresh cherries are what make the color real — deep ruby, no food dye needed.
- 3
Juice the limes
Squeeze the limes to get about 1/2 cup of fresh juice. Fresh only here — bottled lime juice turns bitter and flat and you'll taste the difference immediately.
- 4
Build the pitcher
In a 2-quart pitcher, combine the cooled syrup, lime juice, cherry puree, and the ice. Top with cold water to the 2-quart line and stir. Taste and add a splash more water if you want it lighter. Serve right away over more ice, or chill until you're ready.
