Instructions
  1. 1

    Mash the mix

Drain and rinse two 15-ounce cans of black beans. Add them to a food processor with the seasoned bread crumbs, egg, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, pepper and cumin. Pulse until the mixture is almost a paste with some lumps still in there. No food processor? A potato masher in a big bowl does the same job.

  1. 2

    Form the patties

Divide the mixture into 6 evenly sized patties. If they feel too wet to hold, work in an extra spoonful of bread crumbs and let them sit 5 minutes.

  2. 3

    Cook and serve

Heat the canola oil in a cast-iron skillet over medium. Cook the patties until the edges are browned and set, 3 to 4 minutes per side. Let them rest a minute so they hold their shape, then serve on toasted buns with whatever fixings you've got.
