Get the oven and bread ready
Preheat the oven to 350F. Cut the loaf of Italian bread into 1-inch slices and lay them out in a single layer across the bottom of an ungreased 9x13-inch baking dish. Tear a few smaller pieces to fill in any gaps so the whole bottom is covered. If you like a firmer, less mushy casserole, pop the bread under the broiler for a minute or two to toast it first.
- 2
Make the creamy spread
In a bowl, stir together the softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, Italian seasoning, and black pepper until smooth. Make sure that cream cheese is good and soft or you'll fight lumps. Spread the mixture evenly over the bread slices, then sprinkle about 1/2 cup of the shredded mozzarella over the top.
- 3
Sauce up the meatballs
In another bowl, gently fold the thawed Italian meatballs together with the pasta sauce until they're all coated. Spoon the saucy meatballs evenly over the cheese layer.
- 4
Top and bake
Scatter the remaining mozzarella over everything. Bake uncovered for 30 to 35 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the edges are golden. If the top browns too fast, lay a sheet of foil loosely over it. Let it rest a few minutes, then slice and serve.
