Heat the oven
Preheat your oven to 400°F and give a 9-inch deep-dish pie plate (or a round cake pan) a good spray of cooking oil so nothing sticks.

In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef with the chopped onion until the meat's no longer pink and the onion's gone soft and translucent. Drain off the fat, then stir in the minced garlic, salt, and pepper.
