- 1
Heat the oven
Get your oven going at 350 degrees F and grab a 9x13 baking dish. A little butter or cooking spray on the bottom never hurts.
- 2
Brown the meat
In a big skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef and Italian sausage together, breaking them up as they cook. Season with a good pinch of salt and pepper. Once there's no pink left, drain off most of the grease.
- 3
Build the meat sauce
Chop the onion and mince the garlic, then add them right to the skillet with the meat. Cook a few minutes until the onion goes soft and sweet. Pour in all but 1/2 cup of the marinara (set that half cup aside for the pasta), stir it together, and set the sauce off to the side.
- 4
Cook the spaghetti
Boil the spaghetti in salted water until just al dente, then drain. Toss the hot noodles with the 3 tablespoons of butter and that reserved 1/2 cup of marinara so every strand gets coated.
- 5
Whip the cheese layer
In a bowl, stir together the softened cream cheese, sour cream, and cottage cheese until it's nice and smooth. This is the creamy middle that earns the 'million dollar' name.
- 6
Layer it up
Spread half the buttered spaghetti in the bottom of the baking dish. Dollop and spread the whole cheese mixture over the top, then pile on the rest of the spaghetti. Spoon the meat sauce evenly over everything.
- 7
Top with cheese
Scatter the shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan over the top in an even blanket.
- 8
Bake
Bake 30 to 40 minutes, until the whole thing is hot and bubbly and the cheese is melted. If the top is browning too fast around the 20-minute mark, lay a sheet of foil loosely over it.
- 9
Rest and serve
Let the casserole sit at least 15 minutes before you cut into it. This rest lets the layers set up so you get clean, tidy squares instead of a slide.
