Everything in the pot
Slice the turkey sausage thin, halve the grape tomatoes, thinly slice the onion, and slice the garlic. Throw the uncooked spaghetti, sausage, tomatoes, basil, onion, garlic, and 4-1/2 cups water all into a Dutch oven. Yes, the raw pasta goes right in with everything else — that's the whole trick.

Boil, then simmer
Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer uncovered until the pasta is al dente, 8 to 10 minutes. Stir occasionally so the spaghetti doesn't clump — that's the one part you can't walk away from. The water cooks down into a light, glossy sauce.

Cheese it and finish
Stir in the Parmesan, salt, and pepper until the cheese melts into the sauce. Taste and add the crushed red pepper flakes if you want a little heat. Top with extra Parmesan and serve straight from the pot.
