Warm the mugs
Fill two mugs or heatproof glasses with hot (not boiling) water and let them sit for a minute or two, then pour it out. A warm mug keeps the drink hot longer and makes the cream behave.
- 2
Sweeten and spike
Add 1 teaspoon sugar and 1 ounce Irish whiskey to each warmed mug.
- 3
Pour the coffee
Fill each mug with 1 cup of hot, strong, freshly brewed coffee (a dark roast is perfect). Stir until the sugar fully dissolves.
- 4
Float the cream
Lightly whip the heavy cream until it just thickens but is still pourable. Gently spoon it over the back of a spoon so it floats in a smooth layer on top. Don't stir, sip the hot coffee right through the cool cream.
