Instructions
- 1
Muddle the mint and lemon
Drop the mint leaves into a cocktail shaker and muddle them 4 to 5 times — just enough to wake up the oils, you're not trying to shred them. Cut the lemon quarter into two wedges, add them in, and give it a few more presses to release the juice.
- 2
Shake it cold
Pour in the bourbon and simple syrup, then fill the shaker with ice. Cap it and shake hard until the outside is frosty, about 15 seconds.
- 3
Strain and serve
Strain into a lowball glass over fresh crushed ice. Add a splash of soda water if you want to lighten it up, and garnish with a mint sprig.

Notes & Tips
Basically what happens when a Whiskey Sour and a Mint Julep have a baby — tart, herby, and stupid easy since you don't even have to juice a lemon. Bourbon is the classic pick but any whiskey works. Ratio to remember: 2 parts booze to 1 part simple syrup, and let the lemon and mint do the heavy lifting. Mocktail swap: skip the bourbon, muddle the same lemon and mint, add the simple syrup, and top with soda water (or cold ginger ale) for a minty lemon fizz nobody at the table will feel left out drinking.
